Here are some timely tips from the experts at CertaPro Painters:
  • Preparation is the key, and the key is prepping a good start with a thorough washing of all external surfaces. Even if the surface does not appear dirty, it must be washed. Protected surfaces such as porch ceilings and overhanging rooflines especially vulnerable to waste because they do not hold a wash in the rain.
  • Use caulking to fill any gaps in the trim and siding where rain water can seep into water and water vapor is the main cause of most premature paint failure. Paint it is often not enough to bridge the gaps and cracks in trim and siding.
  • You can over-seal the house! Small gaps and cracks in the trim and siding that are well protected from the rain and often there to allow moisture out of the house. Before closing the gap or gaps to ask yourself whether the water can get inside. If well protected, so be it.
  • Always find glossiest paint for the exterior. Starting with gloss paint layer will provide a longer life. This type of paint will also be easier to wash and keep clean.
  • Less is more. If you use too much paint and not wear out, when it finally started to go you have a lot of extra coats to erode. Two layers is rarely necessary except for a drastic change in color or severe exposure to sunlight and extreme weather conditions.
  • With today's quality exterior coatings, you rarely need a full prime coat surface except on new or bare. Use a good quality acrylic latex exterior paint products and put it on a clean surface and you will not need a primer undercoat.
  • You do not get stuck with the color of aluminum or vinyl siding. Today's exterior paint on aluminum and vinyl siding will often outlive their original color and finish. If you are painting for the first time, make sure you apply two coats. If you paint vinyl, not paint it any darker than that already exist or may warp in the hot sun of the build-up.
